DDoS attacks: layered defence for financial services

1Introduction

Thousands of infected devices flood a service to exhaust network or server capacity.

2Discussion

Attacks hit the network (volume), protocol (e.g. SYN floods) and application layers.

Defence: CDN and scrubbing before the origin, per-IP rate limits, caching hot pages and auto-blocking suspicious patterns.

3Conclusion

Financial institutions need a response plan, provider coordination and periodic capacity tests.
