The G20 Roadmap for Cheaper, Faster Cross-Border Payments

1Introduction

Cross-border payments are often expensive, slow, opaque and hard to access. In October 2020 the G20 endorsed a roadmap coordinated by the Financial Stability Board.

2Discussion

It sets 2027 targets, including 75% of cross-border payments credited within one hour, average retail payment costs of no more than 1%, and remittance costs of at most 3%.

3Conclusion

The FSB publishes annual progress reports and pursues measures such as linking fast payment systems, message standardisation (ISO 20022) and extended settlement hours.
