MiCA: A Unified Crypto-Asset Framework for Europe

1Introduction

The Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation, (EU) 2023/1114, creates a single EU-wide framework instead of national rules.

2Discussion

Rules on stablecoins (asset-referenced and e-money tokens) apply from 30 June 2024, and the rest, including licensing of crypto-asset service providers, from 30 December 2024.

3Conclusion

MiCA requires issuers to publish transparent white papers, hold adequate reserves and follow consumer protection rules; licensed service providers can passport across all member states.
