The Digital Euro: Where Does the ECB Stand?

1Introduction

The ECB describes the digital euro as a digital form of central bank cash that everyone in the euro area could use for everyday payments, online and offline.

2Discussion

After its investigation phase, the ECB began a preparation phase in November 2023 covering the rulebook, provider selection and experimentation. Any issuance decision depends on adoption of the EU legal framework.

3Conclusion

Key design features include privacy, free basic use and holding limits to prevent sudden deposit outflows from banks.
