The Federal Reserve Banks launched FedNow in July 2023. It lets participating banks and credit unions settle payments in seconds, 24/7/365.

The aim is to make instant payments available beyond large banks. Common uses include on-demand pay, person-to-person payments and last-minute bill payments.

FedNow uses ISO 20022 and operates alongside private-sector instant payment systems, showing that instant payments are now core infrastructure even in mature markets.
