Cyber Risk: A Growing Threat to Financial Stability, Says the IMF

1Introduction

Chapter 3 of the IMF’s April 2024 Global Financial Stability Report warns that cyberattacks have become a serious threat to financial stability, with the financial sector a prime target given its data and transaction volumes.

2Discussion

The report notes that cyber incidents have risen in recent years and extreme losses have grown. A severe incident at a key institution or service provider could spread through loss of confidence or disruption of critical services.

3Conclusion

The IMF recommends stronger supervisory frameworks, resilience testing, incident reporting, response and recovery plans and international cooperation. For fintechs, security must be designed in from the start.
