IOSCO Recommendations for Crypto Markets: Same Risk, Same Rules

1Introduction

In November 2023 IOSCO published its Policy Recommendations for Crypto and Digital Asset Markets, applying the principle of “same activities, same risks, same regulatory outcomes” so that crypto services meet standards comparable to traditional markets.

2Discussion

The 18 recommendations cover conflicts from vertical integration, market abuse and manipulation, custody and protection of client assets, operational and technological risk, retail disclosure and cross-border cooperation.

3Conclusion

Weeks later IOSCO issued separate recommendations on DeFi. The message for businesses: without governance, transparency and segregation of client assets, activity in this market is not sustainable.
