Swift gpi: Tracking Cross-Border Payments Like a Parcel

1Introduction

Cross-border payments were long slow, costly and opaque: senders did not know where funds were, what fees were deducted or when they would arrive. In 2017 Swift launched global payments innovation (gpi) to fix this within the correspondent banking network.

2Discussion

Each gpi payment carries a unique end-to-end transaction reference (UETR). Member banks commit to same-day crediting, transparent fee deduction and unaltered remittance information, enabling parcel-style tracking.

3Conclusion

gpi is part of the global push, led by the G20 since 2020, to improve cross-border payments on cost, speed, access and transparency. For importers and exporters, predictable timing and fees sharpen liquidity management.
