Standard banking APIs: why interface consistency is key to open banking

1Introduction

Open banking lets banks share data and services with third parties, with customer consent, through APIs. If every bank uses different formats, authentication and error codes, each fintech must build and maintain a separate integration per bank.

2Discussion

Standardisation means agreeing on data structures, consent and authentication flows, error codes and service levels. Countries that moved early show that a shared standard sharply lowers the cost of entry for new players.

3Conclusion

For organisations the lesson is clear: keep the bank-connection layer separate and replaceable so that changing standards do not force a full rewrite.
