The FATF Travel Rule: Transparency in Virtual Asset Transfers

1Introduction

In 2019 FATF updated Recommendation 15 to bring virtual assets and virtual asset service providers (VASPs) under AML/CFT standards.

2Discussion

The core requirement is the Travel Rule: just as banks attach originator and beneficiary data to wire transfers, exchanges and custodial wallets must exchange this information when transferring to each other.

3Conclusion

FATF’s follow-up reviews stress that implementation across jurisdictions remains uneven, creating gaps. For fintechs, customer due diligence and transaction data must be designed in from day one.
