Basel and Cryptoassets: How Much Capital Should Banks Hold?

1Introduction

The Basel Committee finalised its standard on the prudential treatment of cryptoasset exposures in December 2022 so banks worldwide apply consistent capital rules.

2Discussion

It sets two groups: Group 1 covers tokenised traditional assets and stablecoins with effective stabilisation meeting strict conditions; Group 2 covers other cryptoassets such as bitcoin, with very high risk weights and an exposure limit.

3Conclusion

The message for innovators: the more transparent the backing and mechanism of a digital asset, the easier its path into regulated banking.
