The OECD AI Principles: The First Intergovernmental AI Standard

1Introduction

The OECD adopted its AI Principles in May 2019, the first intergovernmental standard on AI, and updated them in May 2024 to reflect new developments including generative AI.

2Discussion

The five values-based principles are: inclusive growth and well-being; respect for human rights and democratic values including fairness and privacy; transparency and explainability; robustness, security and safety; and accountability. Five recommendations for policymakers range from research investment to workforce preparation and international cooperation.

3Conclusion

In financial services this means customers know when they interact with AI, key decisions such as loan refusals can be explained, and firms take responsibility for model outcomes.
