Post-Quantum Cryptography: Preparing Finance for Quantum Computers

1Introduction

Powerful future quantum computers could break much of today’s cryptography that secures payments and bank communications. “Harvest now, decrypt later” means today’s data is already at risk.

2Discussion

In August 2024 NIST finalised its first three post-quantum standards: FIPS 203, FIPS 204 and FIPS 205.

3Conclusion

In Project Leap, the BIS with the Banque de France and Deutsche Bundesbank tested quantum-resistant protection for payment system communications. The shared message: migration takes time and planning should start now.
