Asset tokenisation: the future of digital ownership and capital markets

1Introduction

Tokenisation represents ownership rights in real assets — property, securities, commodities — as digital tokens on distributed ledgers, enabling fractional ownership.

2Discussion

Benefits include liquidity for illiquid assets, lower minimum investment, faster settlement and transparent ownership records; the BIS sees it as a key trend for the financial system.

Challenges include securities-law compliance, the legal link between token and asset, investor protection and smart-contract security.

3Conclusion

For Iran’s capital market, tokenisation could be explored through pilots in regulatory sandboxes to test its potential without systemic risk.
