Project Agorá: Tokenised Bank and Central Bank Money on One Platform

1Introduction

Project Agorá, launched in 2024 by the BIS Innovation Hub, brings together seven central banks and over forty private financial institutions to explore how tokenised commercial bank deposits and tokenised central bank money can operate on a common programmable platform.

2Discussion

By placing money and payment messages on one ledger, separate messaging, checks and settlement steps that make cross-border payments slow and costly could be combined into one operation.

3Conclusion

Agorá is a practical test of the BIS unified-ledger concept: innovation within the two-tier system, anchored in central bank money.
